Outdoor Trash Can Storage DIY: A Comprehensive Guide to Conceal and Organize

Outdoor trash cans are essential for waste management, but they can often be unsightly and detract from the aesthetic of your home exterior. Fortunately, with a little creativity and some simple materials, you can easily build your own outdoor trash can storage enclosure to keep your bins hidden and organized.

Materials You'll Need:

  1. Treated lumber (cedar, redwood, or pine)
  2. Outdoor wood screws
  3. Circular saw or miter saw
  4. Drill
  5. Wood stain or paint (optional)
  6. Door hinges
  7. Door latch

Step 1: Plan and Cut the Lumber

Determine the size and dimensions of the enclosure based on the number and size of your trash cans. Cut the lumber into the following pieces:

  • Vertical posts: 4 pieces of equal length
  • Horizontal framing: 4 pieces of equal length for the top and bottom frame
  • Side panels: 2 or 4 pieces (depending on the size of the enclosure)
  • Door frame: 2 pieces for the top and bottom frame, and 2 pieces for the side frame
  • Door panel: 1 piece that fits the opening of the door frame

Step 2: Assemble the Frame

Assemble the frame by securing the vertical posts to the horizontal framing using wood screws. Make sure the posts are perpendicular to the framing and securely fastened.

Step 3: Attach the Side Panels

Attach the side panels to the frame by screwing them into the vertical posts and horizontal framing. Ensure that the panels are flush with the edge of the frame.

Step 4: Build and Hang the Door

Assemble the door frame by connecting the top, bottom, and side pieces using wood screws. Attach the door panel to the frame and then hang the door to the enclosure using door hinges.

Step 5: Install the Door Latch

Install a door latch to keep the door securely closed. You can choose a simple latch or a lockable one for added security.

Step 6: Stain or Paint (Optional)

If desired, stain or paint the enclosure to match your outdoor décor or protect the wood from weathering. Allow the finish to dry completely before using.

Tips for Building Your Outdoor Trash Can Storage:

  • Use treated lumber to ensure durability and resistance to rot.
  • Secure all screws tightly to prevent the enclosure from becoming loose.
  • Consider adding a lid to the enclosure to prevent rainwater from entering.
  • If possible, build the enclosure in a shaded area to prevent the wood from fading.
  • Customize the enclosure with decorative trim or paint to enhance its appearance.
By following these steps, you can create a functional and stylish outdoor trash can storage enclosure that will keep your bins organized and hidden from view. Enjoy the convenience and aesthetics of a well-maintained outdoor space!
