DIY Outdoor Natural Gas Fireplace: A Comprehensive Guide

Transform your outdoor space into a cozy haven with a DIY natural gas fireplace. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you construct a stunning and functional outdoor fireplace:

Gathering Materials and Tools

Begin by gathering the necessary materials, including natural gas line, fire pit burner ring, fire glass, fire pit glass media, gravel, mortar mix, bricks or stones, and fire pit base. You'll also need tools such as a shovel, measuring tape, level, trowel, safety glasses, and gloves.

Choosing an Ideal Location

Select a location with good drainage, away from trees and flammable objects. Consider wind direction to optimize heat distribution. Ensure access to a natural gas line and locate the fireplace a safe distance from any structures.

Preparing the Base

Excavate the ground to create a pit for the fireplace. Dig to a depth that accommodates the fire pit base and allows for drainage. Fill the pit with gravel for stability and drainage. Tamp down the gravel firmly.

Installing the Fire Pit Base

Place the fire pit base into the pit and level it using a spirit level. Secure the base with mortar mix, ensuring stability. Allow the mortar to cure completely before proceeding.

Connecting the Natural Gas Line

Hire a licensed plumber to connect the natural gas line to the fire pit burner ring. Follow all necessary safety precautions and ensure airtight connections. Test the connection for leaks using a soap solution.

Placing the Burner Ring and Fire Glass

Position the burner ring over the fire pit base and secure it with fire glass. Fill the fire pit with additional fire glass, covering the burner ring completely. The fire glass protects the burner and provides an even flame distribution.

Building the Surround

Construct the surround around the fire pit using bricks or stones. Create a stable and aesthetically pleasing design that complements your outdoor décor. Use mortar mix to join the bricks or stones, ensuring durability and a cohesive appearance.

Testing and Enjoying

Once the fireplace is complete, test it by igniting the burner. Adjust the gas flow to achieve an appropriate flame height. Enjoy the warmth and ambiance of your DIY natural gas fireplace, creating a perfect outdoor gathering space.
