How to Restain Outdoor Wooden Furniture

Refinishing outdoor wooden furniture is an essential task for maintaining its beauty and longevity. Over time, exposure to the elements can cause the finish to fade, crack, and peel, leaving your furniture looking dull and uninviting. By following a few simple steps, you can restore your outdoor furniture to its former glory and enjoy it for years to come.

Gather Your Materials

Before you begin, gather the following materials:

  • Wood cleaner
  • Sandpaper (120-grit and 220-grit)
  • Tack cloth
  • Wood stain
  • Paintbrush or roller
  • Polyurethane (optional)

Clean the Furniture

Begin by cleaning your furniture thoroughly with a wood cleaner. This will remove any dirt, grime, or mildew that has accumulated on the surface. Use a soft cloth to apply the cleaner and rinse it off with clean water.

Sand the Furniture

Once the furniture is clean, it's time to sand it lightly to remove any remaining old finish or imperfections. Start with 120-grit sandpaper and work your way up to 220-grit. Sand in the direction of the wood grain and avoid sanding too deeply.

Wipe Down the Furniture

Use a tack cloth to remove any dust or debris created by sanding. This will ensure that the wood stain adheres properly.

Apply the Wood Stain

Now it's time to apply the wood stain. Use a paintbrush or roller to apply the stain evenly to the surface of the furniture. Work in the direction of the wood grain and avoid applying too much stain. Allow the stain to penetrate the wood for the amount of time specified by the manufacturer.

Wipe Off Excess Stain

Once the stain has penetrated the wood, wipe off any excess stain with a clean cloth. This will help to prevent the stain from darkening too much and will give your furniture a more even finish.

Apply Polyurethane (Optional)

If you want to add extra protection to your furniture, you can apply a coat of polyurethane. Polyurethane is a clear finish that will seal the wood and protect it from water damage, UV rays, and wear and tear. Apply the polyurethane according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Allow the Furniture to Dry

Once you have finished applying the stain and polyurethane, allow the furniture to dry completely. This may take several hours or even overnight. Once the furniture is dry, you can enjoy your newly refinished outdoor furniture for years to come.
