How to Remove a Sensor from an Outdoor Light Switch

Outdoor light switches with built-in sensors can be convenient, but when the sensor malfunctions or needs to be replaced, you may need to remove it from the switch. Removing a sensor from an outdoor light switch is a straightforward process that can usually be completed in a few minutes.

Materials You'll Need

  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • (Optional) Electrical tape

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Turn off Power Before you begin any electrical work, it is essential to turn off the power to the outdoor light switch. To do this, locate the circuit breaker or fuse box for your home and turn off the circuit breaker or remove the fuse that corresponds to the outdoor light switch. 2. Remove the Light Switch Cover Plate Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the screws holding the light switch cover plate and lift off the cover plate. 3. Locate the Sensor The sensor is usually located on the side of the outdoor light switch. It will be a small, rectangular box with wires attached to it. 4. Disconnect the Sensor Carefully disconnect the wires from the sensor. Use a pair of needle-nose pliers to hold the wire connector and twist it counterclockwise to loosen it. Once the wire connector is loose, slide it back along the wire and pull the wire out of the connector. Repeat this step for all wires connected to the sensor. 5. Remove the Sensor Once the wires are disconnected, you should be able to pull the sensor straight out of the outdoor light switch. If the sensor is stuck, wiggle it gently until it comes loose. 6. (Optional) Wrap Wires with Electrical Tape If you plan on replacing the sensor later, you can wrap the exposed wires with electrical tape to protect them. Simply cut a piece of electrical tape and wrap it around the exposed wire several times. 7. Install the New Sensor (if applicable) If you are replacing the sensor, connect the wires to the new sensor according to the manufacturer's instructions. Push the new sensor into the outdoor light switch until it clicks into place. 8. Test the Light Switch Turn on the power to the outdoor light switch and test the light switch to make sure it is working properly.

Tips

  • If you are uncomfortable working with electricity, it is best to call an electrician.
  • Make sure that the area around the outdoor light switch is dry before you begin working.
  • When removing the sensor, be careful not to damage the wires.
