How to Install a Light Sensor on an Outdoor Light

Automatic light fixtures are both practical and energy-efficient. They help you illuminate outdoor areas without having to manually turn lights on and off. However, to take advantage of these benefits, you need to know how to install a light sensor on an outdoor light.

Before You Start

Before you begin the installation process, gather the necessary tools and materials:

Light sensor
Electrical tape
Wire strippers
Screwdriver
Optional: Mounting bracket

Additionally, be sure to turn off the power to the outdoor light at the electrical panel before starting any work.

Installation Instructions

Follow these steps to install the light sensor:

Disconnect the Light Fixture: Remove the cover of the light fixture by unscrewing the mounting screws. Disconnect the wires from the light fixture (black to black, white to white, green or bare copper to ground).
Wire the Light Sensor: Connect the black wire from the light sensor to the black wire from the light fixture. Connect the white wire from the light sensor to the white wire from the light fixture. Connect the green or bare copper wire from the light sensor to the ground wire from the light fixture.
Secure the Light Sensor: If your light fixture has a built-in light sensor mounting bracket, use the screws provided to mount the sensor in place. If not, use electrical tape to secure the sensor to the light fixture.
Reassemble the Light Fixture: Replace the cover of the light fixture, being careful not to pinch any wires.
Restore Power: Turn the power back on at the electrical panel.

Testing the Light Sensor

To test the light sensor, wait until it gets dark outside. The light should automatically turn on when it senses darkness and turn off when it senses light.
