How to Grow Amaryllis Outdoors in Florida

Amaryllis are beautiful, showy flowers that are relatively easy to grow in Florida. With a little care, you can enjoy these stunning blooms year after year.

Choosing a Location

Amaryllis prefer full sun to partial shade. They will do best in a location that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. The soil should be well-drained and amended with organic matter. Amaryllis bulbs can tolerate a wide range of soil pH levels, but they prefer a slightly acidic soil with a pH between 6.0 and 6.5.

Planting Bulbs

Amaryllis bulbs should be planted in the fall, about 6 weeks before the first frost. Plant bulbs with the pointed end up, about 6 inches deep and 12 inches apart. Water the bulbs well after planting and then mulch around them with a layer of organic matter, such as compost or bark.

Watering and Fertilizing

Amaryllis need regular watering, especially during the growing season. Water the plants deeply, and allow the soil to dry out slightly between watering. Fertilize the plants every 2-3 weeks with a balanced fertilizer. Stop fertilizing after the plants have finished blooming.

Winter Care

Amaryllis are not cold hardy and will need to be protected from cold temperatures. In Florida, you can leave the bulbs in the ground and mulch heavily around them with a layer of organic matter, such as compost or straw. In colder climates, the bulbs should be dug up and stored in a cool, dry place until spring.

Propagation

Amaryllis can be propagated by division or by seed. Division is the easiest method and can be done in the spring or fall. Simply divide the bulbs into smaller pieces, each with at least one growing point. Plant the divisions in well-drained soil and water them well. Seed propagation is more difficult and is not typically recommended for home gardeners.
