How to Grow Amaryllis Outdoors

Amaryllis are striking, showy flowers that are relatively easy to grow outdoors. Following a few simple steps will help you enjoy their vibrant blooms season after season.

Choosing the Right Location and Soil

Amaryllis prefer well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. They need full sun for at least six hours per day, but can tolerate partial shade in warmer climates. Avoid planting them in areas where water collects, as they do not tolerate wet feet.

Planting Amaryllis

Plant amaryllis bulbs in the fall in most areas, about six weeks before the first hard frost is expected. Dig a hole that is three times the width of the bulb and twice as deep. Place the bulb in the hole with the pointed end up and the neck just above the soil line. Firm the soil around the bulb and water well.

Watering and Fertilizing

Water amaryllis regularly during the growing season, especially when the top inch of soil is dry. Fertilize them monthly with a balanced liquid fertilizer.

Mulching and Winter Care

Mulch around amaryllis with compost or bark to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. In colder climates, amaryllis should be protected from frost by digging them up in the fall and storing them indoors in a cool, dark place until spring.

Dividing and Repotting

Amaryllis can be divided and repotted every three to four years. Divide them in the fall after the foliage has died back. Repot them in fresh potting mix and water well.

Common Pests and Diseases

Amaryllis are generally pest-free, but they can be susceptible to mealybugs and aphids. Treat these pests with an insecticidal soap spray. Amaryllis can also be susceptible to fungal diseases, which can be prevented by avoiding overwatering and providing good drainage.
