How to Build an Outdoor Fireplace Out of Cinder Block
Building an outdoor fireplace out of cinder blocks is a great way to add warmth and ambiance to your backyard. It's a relatively simple project that can be completed in a weekend with the right tools and materials.
Materials You'll Need
- Cinder blocks
- Mortar
- Firebrick
- Fireplace grate
- Flue liner
- Capstone
- Tools:
- Level
- Trowel
- Hammer
- Chisel
- Safety glasses
Step 1: Plan Your Fireplace
Before you start building, you need to plan out your fireplace. Decide where you want it to be located and how big you want it to be. The size of your fireplace will determine how many cinder blocks you need.
Step 2: Build the Base
The first step is to build the base of your fireplace. Start by laying out a row of cinder blocks on the ground. Use a level to make sure the row is level. Then, add another row of cinder blocks on top of the first row, staggering the joints. Continue adding rows of cinder blocks until the base is the desired height.
Step 3: Build the Firebox
Once the base is complete, you can start building the firebox. The firebox is the part of the fireplace where the fire will burn. To build the firebox, you'll need to use firebrick.
Step 4: Install the Flue Liner
The flue liner is what allows the smoke from the fire to escape. The flue liner should be made of stainless steel or ceramic. To install the flue liner, simply insert it into the hole in the top of the firebox.
Step 5: Add the Capstone
The capstone is the final piece of the fireplace. It covers the top of the fireplace and protects it from the elements. To add the capstone, simply place it on top of the fireplace and use a level to make sure it is level.
Step 6: Enjoy Your New Fireplace
Once your fireplace is complete, you can enjoy it with your family and friends. Be sure to follow all safety precautions when using your fireplace, and never leave it unattended.
