How to Build an Outdoor Trash Can Bin

Keep your outdoor space clean and organized with a durable and functional trash can bin. Building one yourself is a straightforward project that requires minimal materials and tools. Follow these step-by-step instructions to create a customized trash can bin that meets your specific needs.

Materials:

  • 1x4 cedar or redwood boards (6 ft. long)
  • 1x6 cedar or redwood board (6 ft. long)
  • Wood screws (2 1/2 in.)
  • Galvanized nails (1 1/2 in.)
  • Exterior wood glue
  • Stain or paint (optional)

Tools:

  • Mitre saw
  • Drill
  • Circular saw
  • Sandpaper or sander
  • Clamps
  • Measuring tape and pencil

Steps:

1. Cut the Boards:

  1. Cut two 1x4 boards to 24 inches long for the sides.
  2. Cut two 1x4 boards to 18 inches long for the back and front.
  3. Cut one 1x4 board to 12 inches long for the bottom.
  4. Cut one 1x6 board to 36 inches long for the lid.

2. Assemble the Sides and Back:

  1. Apply wood glue to the edges of the 18-inch 1x4 boards.
  2. Attach the boards to the 24-inch 1x4 boards to form an "L" shape. Secure them with wood screws.
  3. Repeat for the other side.

3. Install the Front and Bottom:

  1. Apply wood glue to the edges of the 18-inch 1x4 boards.
  2. Attach the boards to the assembled sides to form a box. Secure them with wood screws.
  3. Align the 12-inch 1x4 board along the bottom of the box and attach it with wood screws.

4. Build the Lid:

  1. Lay the 36-inch 1x6 board flat.
  2. Cut two triangular notches into the ends of the board to fit over the edges of the bin.
  3. Attach galvanized nails along the bottom edge of the lid to hold it in place when closed.

5. Finishing Touches:

  1. Sand the entire bin to smooth any rough edges.
  2. Apply stain or paint as desired for protection and a customized look.
  3. Insert a trash bag into the bin to complete the project.
