How to Build an Outdoor Fire Pit with Bricks: A Step-by-Step Guide
Enhance your outdoor living space with the warmth and ambiance of an outdoor fire pit. Building a brick fire pit is a rewarding project that can be completed in a weekend with minimal experience. Follow these steps for a sturdy and stylish fire pit that will add character and warmth to your backyard:
Materials You'll Need:
- Bricks (fire-resistant bricks recommended) - Masonry cement - Sand - Gravel - Brick pavers for the base (optional) - Level - Measuring tape - String or twine - Circular saw or tile cutter - Gloves - Safety glasses
Step 1: Plan and Prepare
Choose a level location in your yard away from trees and buildings. Mark out a circular or rectangular shape for the fire pit, making sure it's large enough for your desired use. Remove any grass or vegetation within the marked area.
Step 2: Build the Base
(Optional) Create a solid base for the fire pit by laying 2-3 rows of brick pavers in a level circular or rectangular pattern. Pack sand in between the pavers to secure them.
Step 3: Lay the First Circle of Bricks
Apply a thin layer of masonry cement to the base. Start laying the first circle of bricks around the perimeter, spacing them evenly. Check the level regularly to ensure the circle is even.
Step 4: Fill and Layer Bricks
Fill the center of the first circle with gravel to create drainage and airflow. Begin laying the second circle of bricks on top, staggered to create stability. Continue layering bricks, filling each layer with gravel and staggering the bricks until you reach the desired height.
Step 5: Cut and Fit Cap Stones
Measure and cut the cap stones to fit the top edge of the fire pit. Use a circular saw or tile cutter for precise cuts. Place the cap stones on top of the last layer of bricks, leaving a small gap for expansion.
Step 6: Mortar the Fire Pit
Mix the masonry cement according to the instructions and apply it generously between the bricks, both inside and out. Smooth the mortar with a trowel and remove any excess. Wipe down the bricks with a damp sponge to clean any mortar residue.
Step 7: Allow to Cure and Enjoy
Allow the fire pit to cure for several days before using it. Keep it covered from moisture during this time. Once cured, your outdoor brick fire pit is ready to create cozy and memorable gatherings around a roaring fire.
