How to Build an L-Shaped Outdoor Bar

An L-shaped outdoor bar is a great way to add style and functionality to your backyard. It provides a convenient spot to serve drinks and food while entertaining guests, and it can also be used as a prep area for grilling or other outdoor cooking. Building an L-shaped outdoor bar is a relatively easy project that can be completed in a weekend with the right tools and materials.

Materials You'll Need

  • Pressure-treated lumber for the frame and countertop
  • Concrete blocks for the base
  • Gravel for drainage
  • Sink (optional)
  • Faucet (optional)
  • Refrigerator (optional)
  • Ice maker (optional)
  • Bar stools

Step 1: Build the Base

Start by leveling an area for the bar. Dig a trench around the perimeter that is 6 inches deep and 12 inches wide. Fill the trench with gravel and tamp it down to create a solid base for the concrete blocks. Place the concrete blocks in the trench and level them with a level.

Step 2: Build the Frame

Cut the pressure-treated lumber to the length and width of the bar. Assemble the frame using 3-inch deck screws. The frame should be sturdy enough to support the weight of the countertop and any appliances you plan to use.

Step 3: Install the Sink and Faucet (Optional)

If you want to install a sink and faucet, cut a hole in the countertop for the sink. Place the sink in the hole and secure it with silicone sealant. Install the faucet on the sink and connect it to the water supply.

Step 4: Install the Refrigerator and Ice Maker (Optional)

If you want to install a refrigerator and ice maker, cut a hole in the countertop for each appliance. Place the appliances in the holes and secure them with silicone sealant. Connect the appliances to the power supply.

Step 5: Install the Countertop

Place the countertop on the frame and secure it with 2-inch deck screws. Make sure the countertop is level and overhangs the frame by at least 1 inch on all sides.

Step 6: Add Bar Stools

Place the bar stools around the bar so that guests can sit comfortably and enjoy their drinks and food.

Finishing Touches

Once you have completed the construction of your L-shaped outdoor bar, you can add your own personal touches to make it unique. You can paint the bar, add decorative trim, or install outdoor lighting. You can also add a fire pit or grill to create a complete outdoor entertainment area.
