DIY Outdoor Fireplace Using Cinder Blocks

Building an outdoor fireplace can be a great way to enjoy your backyard with friends and family. And using cinder blocks is a great way to do it affordably and easily. Cinder blocks are sturdy, heat-resistant, and relatively easy to work with making them an excellent choice for outdoor fireplaces.

Materials You'll Need:

Cinder blocks
Firebrick
Mortar
Fireplace grate
Chimney cap
Gravel
Sand

Instructions:

1. Prepare the site: Choose a level spot in your backyard for your fireplace. Clear the area of any vegetation and rocks. Dig a hole about 6 inches deep and fill it with gravel. Tamp down the gravel to create a level base.

2. Lay the first course of cinder blocks: Start by laying out the first course of cinder blocks around the perimeter of the fireplace. Use a level to make sure the blocks are level. Mortar the blocks together as you go.

3. Build the walls: Continue building the walls of the fireplace by stacking cinder blocks on top of each other. Mortar the blocks together and use a level to make sure the walls are straight.

4. Install the firebrick: Once the walls are complete, it's time to install the firebrick. Firebrick is a special type of brick that is designed to withstand the high temperatures of a fire. Cut the firebrick to fit the inside of the fireplace and mortar it in place.

5. Install the fireplace grate: The fireplace grate will support the logs and allow air to circulate. Place the grate on top of the firebrick.

6. Build the chimney: The chimney will allow smoke to escape from the fireplace. Start by building a small square or rectangular opening at the top of the fireplace. Then, stack cinder blocks on top of each other to form the chimney. Mortar the blocks together and use a level to make sure the chimney is straight.

7. Install the chimney cap: The chimney cap will keep rain and snow out of the chimney. Place the chimney cap on top of the chimney and secure it with screws.

8. Finish the fireplace: Once the fireplace is complete, you can finish it by adding a layer of mortar to the outside of the blocks. This will help to protect the blocks from the elements.
