Natural or manufactured stone pavers
Sand

Step 1: Choose a Location and Size

Select a level and well-drained area away from trees, structures, and flammable objects. Determine the size of your fire pit based on the available space and the number of people you expect to gather around it.

Step 2: Prepare the Base

Excavate a circular or square hole 6-8 inches deep and the size of your desired fire pit. Fill the base with 2-3 inches of gravel and tamp it down to create a stable and draining foundation.

Step 3: Lay the Firebox

Line the bottom of the fire pit with a layer of fire bricks or refractory panels, cutting them to fit as necessary. This layer will protect the base from heat damage.

Step 4: Build the Walls

Begin layering the stone pavers around the firebox, leaving a small gap for air circulation. Use a level to ensure each layer is level. Fill the gaps between the stones with mortar and tamp down to secure them.

Fill the area around the firebox with sand to a depth of 1-2 inches. Sand helps distribute heat and prevent embers from escaping. Tamp down the sand to compact it.
