Build an Outdoor Fire Pit Using Cinder Blocks
A fire pit is a great way to extend your outdoor enjoyment into the cooler months. It provides a warm and inviting place to gather with friends and family, roast marshmallows, or simply relax and enjoy the ambiance.
Building a fire pit out of cinder blocks is a relatively easy and inexpensive project that can be completed in a weekend. Here are the steps on how to do it:
Materials you'll need:
- Cinder blocks (quantity will vary depending on the size of the fire pit)
- Mortar mix
- Water
- Mixing bucket
- Trowel
- Level li>Fire pit grate
Instructions:
- Choose a location for your fire pit. It should be in a safe spot, away from any flammable objects or structures. Ensure it is also in an area where smoke will not bother your neighbors.
- Prepare the ground. Clear any grass or vegetation from the area where you will be building the fire pit. Level the ground using a shovel or a rake.
- Lay the first layer of cinder blocks. Start in the center and work your way outwards, creating a square or circular shape. Ensure the blocks are level and flush with each other.
- Mix the mortar. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for mixing the mortar. The consistency should be similar to peanut butter.
- Apply mortar to the blocks. Use a trowel to spread a layer of mortar between the blocks. Ensure the mortar is evenly distributed and fills any gaps.
- Lay subsequent layers of blocks. Continue stacking the cinder blocks, alternating the direction of each layer to create a stable structure.
- Install the fire pit grate. Once the last layer of blocks is in place, place the fire pit grate on top. This will provide a safe and stable platform for your fire.
- Cure the mortar. Allow the mortar to cure for at least 24 hours before using the fire pit. This will ensure the mortar is fully set and the structure is stable.
Tips:
- Use a fire pit lid when not in use to keep rain and debris out.
- Never leave a fire unattended.
- Keep a bucket of water or sand nearby to extinguish the fire safely.
- Check local regulations regarding fire pits before building one.
