How to Build an Outdoor Hot Water Heater Enclosure
Building an outdoor hot water heater enclosure is an inexpensive project that can protect your water heater from the elements and improve its efficiency.
To build an enclosure, you will need:
- 8-foot sections of 2x4 lumber
- 1/2-inch plywood sheathing
- Insulation (optional)
- Vinyl siding or other exterior cladding
- Nails or screws
- Caulk
1. Cut the 2x4s into the following lengths:
- 4 pieces at 84 inches long for the frame
- 4 pieces at 47 inches long for the sides
- 2 pieces at 24 inches long for the ends
2. Assemble the frame by nailing or screwing the 84-inch 2x4s together to form a rectangle.
3. Attach the 47-inch 2x4s to the inside of the frame, parallel to the 84-inch 2x4s, to form the sides of the enclosure.
4. Attach the 24-inch 2x4s to the inside of the frame, at the front and back, to form the ends of the enclosure.
5. If desired, insulate the inside of the enclosure with fiberglass or foam insulation.
6. Cover the outside of the enclosure with plywood sheathing, nailing or screwing it into place.
7. Cover the plywood sheathing with vinyl siding or other exterior cladding, following the manufacturer's instructions.
8. Caulk all seams and joints to prevent water from leaking into the enclosure.
