How to Build an Outdoor Fire Pit with Bricks

Building an outdoor fire pit with bricks is a rewarding project that can create a cozy and inviting gathering space in your backyard. Follow these step-by-step instructions to learn how to build your own brick fire pit.

Materials

- Bricks (fire-rated) - Fire pit ring or basin - Sand - Gravel - Mortar mix - Shovel - Trowel - Level - Measuring tape - String or chalk line - Safety glasses - Gloves

Step 1: Choose a Location

Select a level and open area away from trees, shrubs, or other flammable materials. Check local building codes for specific requirements.

Step 2: Dig the Fire Pit

Dig a circular hole approximately 12-18 inches deep and 3-5 feet wide. Remove any rocks or roots to create a smooth base.

Step 3: Install the Fire Pit Ring

Place the fire pit ring or basin in the center of the hole and level it using a level and sand.

Step 4: Spread Gravel

Spread a layer of gravel around the base of the fire pit to a depth of 4-6 inches. Tamp down the gravel to create a firm base.

Step 5: Lay the First Row of Bricks

Start by laying a single row of bricks around the perimeter of the fire pit, making sure they are level and plumb. Use a trowel to apply mortar to the bricks and tap them into place.

Step 6: Continue Laying Bricks

Continue laying rows of bricks, offsetting the joints as you go. Use a level to ensure each row is level and use a string line to guide you in maintaining a circular shape.

Step 7: Create a Base

Once you have laid a few rows of bricks, you can create a base for the fire pit by filling the space between the bricks and the fire pit ring with sand.

Step 8: Top the Fire Pit

Once you have reached the desired height, lay the final row of bricks to form the top of the fire pit. Again, ensure they are level and plumb.

Step 9: Let the Mortar Set

Allow the mortar to cure for at least 24 hours before using the fire pit.

Step 10: Enjoy Your Fire Pit

Gather around your new fire pit and enjoy the warmth and ambiance it provides. Remember to practice fire safety precautions, such as keeping a bucket of water or sand nearby, and never leaving a fire unattended.
