How to Build an Outdoor Fireplace from Scratch

Firebricks (approx. 50-75)

Instructions

1. Prepare the Base

Start by digging a hole for the fireplace base that is approximately 6 inches deep and twice the width of the fireplace. Fill the hole with crushed stone and tamp it down firmly.

2. Build the Foundation

Lay a layer of concrete blocks on top of the crushed stone base, ensuring they are level. Use concrete mix to fill in any gaps between the blocks.

3. Create the Firebox

Line the inside of the concrete block foundation with firebricks, using firebrick mortar to hold them in place. Install an ash dump at the bottom of the firebox for easy cleanup.

4. Build the Chimney

Continue laying concrete blocks to form the chimney. Install a lintel over the opening of the firebox to support the weight of the chimney. Run rebar through the mortar joints to reinforce the structure.

5. Install the Chimney Cap

Place the chimney cap on top of the chimney to protect it from the elements. Secure it with mortar.

6. Finish the Exterior

You can finish the exterior of the fireplace with a variety of materials, such as brick, stone, or tile. Use mortar to adhere the materials to the concrete blocks.

7. Fire Safety

Before you light a fire in the fireplace, allow it to cure for at least 24 hours. Keep a fire extinguisher nearby when using the fireplace. Never leave a fire unattended.
