How to Build an Outdoor Storage Bench Seat

If you're looking to add some extra seating and storage to your patio or deck, a storage bench seat is a great option. It's a relatively easy project that can be completed in a weekend, and it's a great way to use up leftover lumber. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to build an outdoor storage bench seat:

Materials:

2x4 lumber (for the frame and legs)
1x6 lumber (for the seat and back)
1/2-inch plywood (for the bottom of the storage compartment)
Wood screws
Exterior glue
Sandpaper
Stain or paint (optional)

Tools:

Circular saw or miter saw
Drill
Screwdriver
Clamps
Level

Instructions:

1. Cut the lumber.

Cut the following pieces from the 2x4 lumber:

4 legs: 18 inches long
2 side rails: 48 inches long
1 front rail: 48 inches long
1 back rail: 48 inches long

Cut the following pieces from the 1x6 lumber:

5 seat slats: 48 inches long
3 back slats: 24 inches long

Cut the bottom of the storage compartment from the 1/2-inch plywood to 48 inches x 18 inches.

2. Assemble the frame.

Attach the legs to the side rails using wood screws and exterior glue. Make sure the legs are flush with the bottom of the side rails. Attach the front and back rails to the legs and side rails using wood screws and glue. Make sure the frame is square before proceeding.

3. Install the seat slats.

Attach the seat slats to the front and back rails using wood screws and glue. Space the slats evenly apart.

4. Install the back slats.

Attach the back slats to the back rail using wood screws and glue. Space the slats evenly apart.

5. Install the bottom of the storage compartment.

Attach the bottom of the storage compartment to the inside of the frame using wood screws and glue.

6. Sand and finish.

Sand the bench seat smooth and apply a stain or paint if desired. Allow the finish to dry completely before using the bench seat.
