How to Lay Indoor Outdoor Carpet on Stairs

Whether you're looking to update the look of your stairs or protect them from wear and tear, indoor outdoor carpet is a great option. It's durable, easy to clean, and comes in a variety of colors and styles. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to lay indoor outdoor carpet on stairs:

Materials You'll Need:

  • Indoor outdoor carpet
  • Carpet tack strip
  • Carpet adhesive
  • Carpet knife
  • Measuring tape
  • Hammer or staple gun
  • Carpet seam tape (optional)

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1: Prepare the stairs
Remove any existing carpet or flooring from the stairs. Clean the stairs to remove any dirt or debris. Ensure the stairs are dry and smooth to ensure proper adhesion.

Step 2: Measure and cut the carpet
Measure the length and width of each stair. Cut the carpet to size, allowing for a few inches of overlap on all sides.

Step 3: Install the carpet tack strip
Install the carpet tack strip around the perimeter of each stair, using a hammer or staple gun. The tack strip will hold the carpet in place.

Step 4: Apply carpet adhesive
Apply carpet adhesive to the back of the carpet, following the manufacturer's instructions. Start from the top stair and work your way down.

Step 5: Lay the carpet
Place the carpet on the stairs, starting from the top stair. Smooth out the carpet and press it firmly into the carpet adhesive. Trim any excess carpet around the edges.

Step 6: Secure the carpet
Tuck the edges of the carpet into the carpet tack strip. Use a carpet knife to cut any excess tack strip. If desired, you can use carpet seam tape to reinforce the seams.

Step 7: Allow the adhesive to dry
Allow the carpet adhesive to dry completely, following the manufacturer's instructions. This may take several hours or even overnight.

Tips:

  • For stairs with a rounded edge, cut the carpet slightly larger and trim it to fit after it's installed.
  • If the stairs are particularly wide, you may need to seam two pieces of carpet together. Use carpet seam tape to create a strong and invisible seam.
  • To protect the carpet from wear and tear, consider using carpet runners or stair treads.
