Building a DIY Square Outdoor Fire Pit: A Step-by-Step Guide
Gather your materials:
- Fire-resistant bricks or blocks
- Sand
- Gravel or crushed stone
- Metal fire ring (optional)
- Level
- Tape measure
- Shovel
- Tamping tool
Choose a suitable location:
Select a level, open area away from flammable structures or vegetation. Ensure the fire pit is at least 10 feet away from any buildings or combustible materials.
Prepare the base:
Dig a shallow pit approximately 6 inches deep and 2 feet wider than the desired fire pit size. Fill the pit with a layer of sand and tamp it down firmly.
Lay the bricks:
Arrange the fire-resistant bricks in a square or rectangular shape on top of the sand base. Leave a small opening for airflow at the bottom of the pit.
Add the fire ring (optional):
If desired, place a metal fire ring inside the brick structure to enhance durability and contain the fire.
Fill with gravel:
Fill the remaining space inside the fire pit with gravel or crushed stone. This layer provides drainage and prevents embers from escaping.
Create an ember barrier:
Surround the perimeter of the fire pit with a ring of sand or soil to prevent embers from spreading beyond the designated area.
Enjoy your DIY fire pit:
Once the fire pit has been constructed, allow it to cure for a few days before using it. Gather around the cozy flames, roast marshmallows, or simply relax and enjoy the ambiance.
