DIY Outdoor Fireplace Using Cinder Blocks: A Step-by-Step Guide

Creating a cozy and inviting outdoor space doesn't have to break the bank. Building a DIY outdoor fireplace using cinder blocks is an affordable and straightforward project that can transform your backyard into a warm and welcoming haven.

Materials You'll Need:

Cinder blocks
Fire-resistant mortar
Fire bricks
Gravel
Metal firebox (optional)
Chimney pipes (optional)
Tools: shovel, level, trowel, mixer

Step 1: Prepare the Base

Dig a shallow pit, approximately 12-18 inches deep and 2-3 feet wide, depending on the desired size of the fireplace. Cover the bottom of the pit with a layer of gravel for drainage.

Step 2: Lay the Base Course

Use fire-resistant mortar to set the first row of cinder blocks, ensuring they are level. Adjust the position of the blocks until they form a square or rectangular shape.

Step 3: Build the Walls

Continue stacking cinder blocks on top of the base course, alternating the direction of the blocks to create a stable structure. Use mortar to secure each block and ensure they are straight and level.

Step 4: Line the Fireplace

To protect the cinder blocks from heat damage, line the interior of the fireplace with fire bricks. Lay the fire bricks directly on top of the cinder blocks, overlapping them slightly to create a tight seal.

Step 5: Create the Fire Box (Optional)

If desired, insert a metal firebox into the center of the fireplace. The firebox will provide a safe and contained area for burning wood or other fuel.

Step 6: Add the Chimney (Optional)

For better ventilation and smoke dispersion, you can add a chimney to the fireplace. Attach chimney pipes to the top of the firebox or insert them through a hole in the cinder blocks above the fire bricks.
